Improving education standards
The first White Lodge Kindergarten opened its doors at 39 Linden Drive, Singapore, on 15th July 1999 with three students, two teachers and a determination to improve the standard of kindergarten education here in Singapore. It incorporates the theories of High Scope, Reggio Emilia and Howard Gardner and is guided by a list of learning objectives. White Lodge was one of the very first schools in Singapore to acknowledge the value that creative education brings to preschool aged children.
Our second school opened in 2001 on Jalan Siap, Upper Bukit Timah. Expanding rapidly to meet demand from parents, we opened our third school in 2002 in the West Coast. As the brand’s reputation grew, there were many requests to open a fourth kindergarten in the East Coast area of the island. White Lodge Kindergarten (East Coast) was opened in December 2005 to meet this demand.
In 2006, the fifth educational facility was opened in Loewen Gardens and was registered as a School of the Arts, which had drop-off programmes as well as extended classes such as art, phonics and reading programmes, Mandarin language classes and a special Parent & Child Programme.
To further enhance and provide continuous learning experience for children attending White Lodge education centres, Jayne Nadarajoo, the Founding Director of White Lodge, ventured in partnership to set up an International school, Avondale Grammar School in 2007. This is a co-educational international school for expatriate children in Singapore. While based on the “Australian Private School” model, the school welcomes children of all nationalities. The school offers a strong educational framework set in an environment, which continues to cultivate in the children, a love and excitement for learning. Younger children tend to thrive in a small and nurturing environment with high levels of individual and group interactions. Thus, following the path of White Lodge centres, Avondale Grammar School also has strict limits on class size and teacher-pupil ratio.
In 2010, White Lodge opened their sixth centre at Central North region of the island that has its location advantages to cater to, the families in that area. In 2011, White Lodge acquired two more sites and the organisation opened their seventh and eight branches, which is Upper East Coast and Phoenix Park respectively.
In March 2017, White Lodge acquired two childcare centres in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and converted these two schools to White Lodge schools. White Lodge will continue to embark on this growth path either organically or non-organically starting with Malaysia and expanding to the rest of other target countries.
Our comprehensive curriculum is based on the most up-to-date education practices and is grounded by our belief in the fundamentals of early childhood education. It incorporates the theories of High Scope, Reggio Emilia and Howard Gardner and is guided by a list of learning objectives.
This combination of influences ensures we provide a programme that encourages our children to be active learners, to acquire the skills of critical thinking and collaboration, and most importantly, to develop confidence in themselves.
At White Lodge, we encourage children to grow and thrive in a supportive and nurturing environment that allows them to develop their personal and academic potential. We stimulate our children through a variety of activities and work to celebrate both their individual and collective efforts.
Children are introduced to different Units of Enquiry based on their interests. Many festivals are introduced and celebrated to create awareness of the variety of cultures present in Singapore. The children are able to meet the set learning objectives through many fun activities.
Our philosophy is to support, nurture, teach and care for children individually so that they might grow in understanding, awareness and responsibility. We very much respect our world, and teach our children from a young age about the importance of caring for our community and the world in which we live.
Mandarin is integrated into the core of the programme with all classes introducing Mandarin as a second language through interactive sessions daily.
Children at our centres not only study the traditional elements of education but are also challenged and involved in a far wider world of learning and development. Our children are encouraged to think broadly and creatively, to develop their social skills, independence and confidence in themselves.
Our children graduate from White Lodge and go on (often to leading international schools), equipped not only with the fundamental language, mathematical and writing skills that they need, but also with a lively curiosity and interest in the world around them.
We firmly believe in celebrating differences and we advocate special needs integration through our schools, acknowledging the reciprocal benefits this can have to all children in a class. A couple of places in each White Lodge class are reserved for children with special needs. A letter of recommendation from a Speech Therapist, sychologist, or other professional is needed to process an application.
“We inspire children to have dreams here at White Lodge. We tell the children to go for it, that nothing is impossible.” – Jayne Nadarajoo, Director
